Big Data & Biocomputing Laboratory

Faculty-in-Charge: Abdul Nazeer K A, Gopakumar G

Staff-in-Charge: Amith Rag

This laboratory was established in 2015 with an objective of fostering research in the dynamic areas of Bioinformatics, Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics. The lab is equipped with state of the art computing facilities featuring powerful workstations designed to handle complex data analyses and simulations. A section of this lab is used by the Ph.D. scholars and PG students working in the relevant cutting-edge topics in AI, Data Science and Bioinformatics. With both wired and wireless Internet connectivity, students have uninterrupted access to essential resources, software and databases, facilitating their research endeavors. This lab is also used by the UG students for their hands-on laboratory work and innovative project development. The department has a long term objective of developing this lab into a Center of Excellence in 'AI for Bio and Health Informatics', with collaboration from institutes of national and international repute.

The 'Bioinformatics, Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics Research Group', formed in its initial form in 2009, is comprised of faculty members, Ph.D. scholars & PG and UG students. Eight Ph.Ds have been already produced from this group and 15 research scholars are currently working on various emerging topics. Major theme of ongoing research of this group is 'AI for Health Care'. Various ongoing works include 'AI/ML based Diagnosis and Prognosis of various diseases like Cancer', 'Medical Image Analysis', 'Repurposing of Drugs using AI and Data Analytics' and 'AI for Precision Medicine’. This group has established collaborations with hospitals and medical institutions in India and abroad in their research in Healthcare.

In addition to its high-tech infrastructure, the BDB Lab also promotes a collaborative atmosphere through regular workshops, seminars, and guest lectures by industry experts and academic leaders. These events not only enhance students’ learning experiences but also keep them abreast of the latest advancements in the field.

The laboratory's commitment to innovation and excellence makes it a pivotal space for students and researchers alike, empowering them to explore new frontiers in Bioinformatics, AI and Data Science while preparing them for impactful careers in the rapidly evolving landscape of Data Science and Biocomputing.
