National Workshop: Advances in Graph Algorithms: Theory and Applications (AGATHA) 2024

The Algorithms and Formal Methods (ALFOM) research group of the Computer Science and Engineering Department of NITC organized a 2-day National Workshop on "Advances in Graph Algorithms: Theory and Applications (AGATHA 2024)" from November 28–29, 2024. Students and faculty from various colleges across South India attended the workshop. The event saw a turnout of 63 people registering online, with 25 successfully completing the workshop.

The workshop commenced with a formal inauguration by Prof. Priya Chandran, Dean of Planning and Development (P&D). The keynote address was delivered by Prof. L. Sunil Chandran from IISc Bangalore, who spoke on "On the Smallest Antichain that Generates an Ideal of Given Size".  There were faculty members from IIT Palakkad also  among the speakers of the workshop. Anand Babu N. B., Ashwin Jacob, and Renjith P., Assistant Professors of the CSE Department, are the coordinators of this workshop

SAGE: Software Advancement in the Gen-AI Era

The 3-Day National Workshop "SAGE: Software Advancement in the Gen-AI Era" was jointly organized by the Department of Computer Science & Engineering and  CITRA from October 7th to 9th, 2024 at NIT Calicut. Participants from various colleges across Kerala, including Thrissur, Chenganoor, Wayanad, and Calicut, actively engaged in the sessions. The event saw an enthusiastic turnout, with 36 students registering online and 30 successfully completing the workshop.

The workshop commenced with a formal inauguration by Prof. Priya Chandran, Dean P&D. The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Solomon Vellaplackal from Societe Generale, who spoke on "Software Development Jobs in the Era of Gen-AI." Dr Anu Mary Chacko and Dr Joe Cheri Ross, Assistant Professors of the CSE Department  are the coordinators of this workshop

Workshop:

A workshop was conducted under the Google Explore ML program in association with TBI, IIC and IEDC on 3rd November 2019. This was an initiative to facilitate student awareness of computer science-related fields through demos and practical implementations.

Leadership Training Workshop

A Leadership Workshop was organized on 29th October from 2-5pm presided by Mr.Shankar Krishnan. There was a Total Participation of 40 students from various streams MTECH,MCA,MBA & BTech divided into few groups. The Entire Session was very Interactive and interesting. The participants got a small glimpse of corporate leadership and later there was a small session on Consultancy as a career option for a selected few interested participants.

"Cloud and Linux" Workshop by IBM

IBM, in association with NITC ACM Students Chapter and Computer Science and Engineering Department conducted a two day workshop on "Cloud and Linux". The key resource people were Ms. Supriya Kanneri, Advisory Software Engineer, IBM and an NITC alumnus and Mr. Yogananth Subramanian from IBM. The hands-on workshop which covered all aspects of managing a private cloud using Openstack, was attended by faculties and students of NITC as well as from various other colleges across Kerala.

Workshop on “Software Product Engineering” by TCS

A five member team from Tata Consultancy Services visited the Computer Science and Engineering Department on 11th January, 2013. The team consisted of Dr Suman Bhattacharya, Component Engineering Group, Debiprasad Swain, Head, Engineering Services Group, Ms. Reeja Goerge, Academic Relationship Manager – Kerala, TCS and two other employees of TCS. The talk began at 10:00 AM at CSED Seminar Hall after a formal welcome by Dr. S D Madhukumar, HOD of CSED.

Dr. Suman took the lead of the workshop. He worked on latest trends in Software Product Engineering, with special reference to those used by TCS. He added that TCS is now into Product Engineering, specifying the challenges and needs of today. He motivated the students to pursue Internships at TCS and offered the best experience. The talk ended with an FAQ session where students raised some technical as well as non-technical doubts to which Dr. Suman replied appropriately. There were a total of 60 attendees.

Sessions on “Fundamentals of C” for BTech First Year Students

NIT Calicut ACM Students chapter, in association with Computer Science and Engineering Association and Computer Society of India Chapter of NITC jointly conducted an  8-day long hands-on series on “Fundamentals of C”. Although the sessions were intended for those students who are weak in computer programming, the response was overwhelming with the students being positive about the impact of the session in their programming skills.

Sessions were conducted on Mondays to Thursdays, after class hours in the Software Systems Laboratory.  All the sessions were hands-on, and the students were taught enough theory before the real programming session. Each day was handled by different resource persons from BTech CSE, MTech CSE and MCA students. There were 3-4 students to assist the resource persons on each day. Rs. 100/- each was collected from the attendees, which was refunded at the successful completion of the course.

Indo US Workshop on Biocomputing ( ISB 2011)

The primary objective of the Indo-US   workshop   on   Biocomputing (ISB-2011) was to bring together domain experts from India and the US to create a bilateral forum, which would provide a platform for engineers, scientists and academicians to exchange views, develop curricula and improve the quality of research in the area of bioinformatics, for the benefit of both countries. The workshop was organized from 12-13 September 2011 at Taj Gateway Hotel at Calicut. This workshop was organized as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of NIT Calicut.

Sr. E.Ahamed, Honourable Minister of state for Human Resources and External Affairs inaugurated the Workshop. Mr.M.K Raghavan, Honourable member of Parliament Calicut and Prof. Sandeep Sanchethi were present during the inauguration.

The Organizing Chairs were Dr. S. D. Madhu Kumar, CSED, NITC, Dr. G. K. Rajanikant (NITC) and Dr. Mathew J. Palakal (Indiana University Perdue University Indianapolis [IUPUI], USA). The workshop was funded by the Indo-US Science & Technology Forum (IUSSTF), New Delhi, India and  Department of BioTechnology, Govt. of India and National Science Foundation ((NSF) USA.

Participation:

The participants for the workshop were based on  invitation only  and about eighty delegates from India and USA participated. Delegates from different backgrounds and expertise sat together and discussed about the latest trends and future developments in the area of Biocomputing. The workshop consisted of thirteen expert lectures by eminent researchers both from India and USA on various aspects of Biocomputing.

The workshop also consisted of dedicated breakout sessions, where the participants were broken up into smaller groups, each one consisting of US and Indian experts for the purpose of discussing possible future research collaborations. During this session, the dynamic exchange of information resulted in a fruitful brainstorming activity.

Further, more than fifty scientific posters covering all the major areas of bioinformatics were displayed in the workshop. It was a golden opportunity for young participants (research scholars, post-graduates and undergraduates) from reputed research institutes (Rajiv Gandhi Center For Biotechnology, Central Food Technological Research Institute, National Chemical Laboratory, Indian Institute Of Technology Madras, Bose Institute, Indian Statistical Institute, Institute Of Microbial Technology, Chandigarh, NIT Calicut etc to present their work.

Outcome of the Workshop: A centre of excellence for Biocomputing is being   setup at the Dept. of Computer science & Engineering at NIT Calicut, In collaboration with IUPUI USA. The director board of the centre has been formed. A panel of researchers from USA and India have signed up for doing result oriented research in the area of Biocomputing.
