The primary objective of the Indo-US workshop on Biocomputing (ISB-2011) was to bring together domain experts from India and the US to create a bilateral forum, which would provide a platform for engineers, scientists and academicians to exchange views, develop curricula and improve the quality of research in the area of bioinformatics, for the benefit of both countries. The workshop was organized from 12-13 September 2011 at Taj Gateway Hotel at Calicut. This workshop was organized as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of NIT Calicut.
Sr. E.Ahamed, Honourable Minister of state for Human Resources and External Affairs inaugurated the Workshop. Mr.M.K Raghavan, Honourable member of Parliament Calicut and Prof. Sandeep Sanchethi were present during the inauguration.
The Organizing Chairs were Dr. S. D. Madhu Kumar, CSED, NITC, Dr. G. K. Rajanikant (NITC) and Dr. Mathew J. Palakal (Indiana University Perdue University Indianapolis [IUPUI], USA). The workshop was funded by the Indo-US Science & Technology Forum (IUSSTF), New Delhi, India and Department of BioTechnology, Govt. of India and National Science Foundation ((NSF) USA.

Participation:
The participants for the workshop were based on invitation only and about eighty delegates from India and USA participated. Delegates from different backgrounds and expertise sat together and discussed about the latest trends and future developments in the area of Biocomputing. The workshop consisted of thirteen expert lectures by eminent researchers both from India and USA on various aspects of Biocomputing.
The workshop also consisted of dedicated breakout sessions, where the participants were broken up into smaller groups, each one consisting of US and Indian experts for the purpose of discussing possible future research collaborations. During this session, the dynamic exchange of information resulted in a fruitful brainstorming activity.
Further, more than fifty scientific posters covering all the major areas of bioinformatics were displayed in the workshop. It was a golden opportunity for young participants (research scholars, post-graduates and undergraduates) from reputed research institutes (Rajiv Gandhi Center For Biotechnology, Central Food Technological Research Institute, National Chemical Laboratory, Indian Institute Of Technology Madras, Bose Institute, Indian Statistical Institute, Institute Of Microbial Technology, Chandigarh, NIT Calicut etc to present their work.
Outcome of the Workshop: A centre of excellence for Biocomputing is being setup at the Dept. of Computer science & Engineering at NIT Calicut, In collaboration with IUPUI USA. The director board of the centre has been formed. A panel of researchers from USA and India have signed up for doing result oriented research in the area of Biocomputing.
